Why is the scion of a wealthy family often described as born with the proverbial silver spoon?

Wish I could give you a good answer for that question... "silver spoon in the mouth" is the saying, but at least in USA most families that are not broke buy their baby's first spoon made out of silver (or a heavy silver plate - hehe).
