Why do so many pigeons have crippled feet?

I've taken notice recently of how many pigeons walk around with deformed or missing feet. Is it a common genetic problems? Or do they just perch in dumb places. Just to head off some of the answers I'm anticipating I hate pigeons and I know they're vermin
